It was sometimes difficult for Jews in the Franco-German region in this period to obtain land for a cemetery. Since Jews would not – and could not – bury their dead in a Christian cemetery, they would sometimes have to transport the dead to another town. In their negotiations with the bishop, these Jews would have placed a high priority on obtaining land on which they could bury their dead.
