The Daily Forward
Daily Forward
line The most important newspaper to emerge was the Jewish Daily Forward, which is still printed today as a weekly, after more than a hundred years. At its height, hundreds of thousands in New York read it. The long-time editor, Abe Cahan (1860-1951, pictured to the left), became a powerful political force leaning toward the social democratic party. Cahan believed that the newspapers should help assimilate the Jewish immigrants as quickly as possible, which ironically would mean the abandonment of the Yiddish language and his newspaper. The Forward also published the best Yiddish writers of the past century including Sholem Asch and the nobel prize winner I.B. Singer.
