Dionicio maldonado

This corrido is a retelling of the life of Dionisio Maldonado. Maldonado was a Mexican tequila smuggler during the prohibition era. During the era of prohibition there was still a desire to relax with a sip of alcohol, but the temperance movement put a temporary stop to that. If someone wanted to quench their thirst they had to go to Mexico to do it. Many people did not have the desire to go into Mexico to get their thirst quenched. People decided that if you wanted to drink, you do not have to go to Mexico, the drink will come to you, and so the tequila smuggler was born. This corrido is typical of the contraband corridos where the smuggler is glorified for his action. These smugglers were glorified and made into heroes when a champion for the battle of intercultural conflict between Texans and Mexicans needed their champions. The cunning that was needed to not get caught was seen as bravery against the injustice of the Anglo trying to keep the Mexican from his business endeavors, even if they were illegal.
