My research proposal involves analyzing the architectural features of Japanese convenience stores and cross-referencing them with neighborhood demographic information. As urban konbini tend to be "chameleons" in their architectural environments, fitting in wherever there is space, they can reveal information about architectural convention in different types of neighborhoods. It is my hope that this research can also provide insight into the strategies of Japanese convenience store models as compared to their American counterparts, revealing potential clues to combating urban food deserts in the United States.
Travel information: I will be traveling for approximately 1 month from July-August, visiting Kanto, Kansai, Hokkaido, Chugoku, Shikoku, and Chubu.
