N1 は N2みたいです。

みたい= colloquial speech

N1 looks like N2.
N1 is similar to N2.
N1 is like N2.

私のへやはごみばこのようです。(ごみばこ=waste basket)

N1 みたいな N2

よう＝な-adjective

N2 that looks like N1
N2 that is like N1

スミスさんはねこのような人です。(looks, personality, etc)

 

N1 は N2 のように + Verb/Adj
N1 は N2 みたいに + Verb/Adj

N1 does something (V) like N2
N1 is (Adj) like N2
スミスさんはねこのようにねます。(Smith sleeps like a cat.)
今日は夏のように暑いですね。（きょうはなつのようにあついですね：It is hot like summer today.)
日本語の宿題が山のようにある。 （にほんごのしゅくだいがやまのようにある：We have homewoork assignments like a mountain --> We have a mountain of homework assignments.)
