Photo shows a man squatting while eating on the side of the street unaware of the traffic near him and seemingly uninterested in whomever may be watching. This is not something that we would not see in many other countries.
I noticed the most squatting in the Pearl and Silk Markets where I would enter a booth and find one of the workers squatting in a corner eating noodles. They never needed a table or anything, just a squat and some chopsticks!
Crouching was extremely common in China. I was suprised how many people would pass up a bench chair to crouch next to it.
People definitely feel more comfortable on the haunches here. Everywhere you looked people were squatting rather than sitting on a curb, chair, or bench.
