Notes on the text
This text of the IPML (the abbreviation I use herein) was scanned in
from the 1907 Oxford edition. That, in turn, was a reprint of the 1823
edition, the last done in Bentham's lifetime.
The table of contents in the 1823 edition had entries for each
numbered “paragraph” of Bentham's text. I have tried to
render that in HTML, but I have also made an abridged table of
contents by chapter and section.
Many of the footnotes have aquired short titles; these were
not in Bentham's text. I have added them as an aid to the
reader, for that I have put the footnotes in separate files from the
