Dear Bat Citizens,

As of June 1, we are delighted to announce that we will accept submissions exclusively through our online submission manager, which you may navigate to here. We will no longer accept unsolicited submissions via post or e-mail. If you submitted your work between November and June through e-mail or snail mail, it will still be considered, but all submissions sent on or after June 1 must utilize the submission manager. We’re excited to use a more environmentally responsible means to consider your work and thank you for your patience during this transition.

BCR 5 RELEASE PARTY!

We’re celebrating the release of a brand new Bat City Review. ISSUE FIVE. This one includes fiction from Pushcart Prize winner Nami Mun, an interview with award-winning novelists Mark Richard and Michael Parker, and poetry from Dara Wier, Joshua Beckman, Mathias Svalina and SO many others. We’re also thrilled to be featuring previously unpublished artwork by a young (zoo-obsessed) E.E. Cummings.

We’ll be welcoming this well-bound book into the world on SATURDAY, APRIL 25th at Whalefall Studios in East Austin. DJ Stephanie Rosen (of BCR 4 Release Party fame) will be spinning, and there will be a live performance by dance/rock band, the FM Campers. Beverages and such will be available for free, and we’ll also have copies of Bat City available at discounted prices.

Three Small Presses, One BIG Read

Bat City Review is teaming up with American Short Fiction and Dalton Publishing to host a lively evening of reading and music this Friday, March 6th, at Cafe Caffeine in Austin. The program includes ASF contributors Smith Henderson and Amelia Gray, Dalton’s Ric Williams, and BCR contributors Josh Morison and Elyse Fenton. All that AND music from Jenny and the Corn Ponies AND Southpaw Jones.

Calling All Aspiring Literary Journal Editors!

Bat City Review is teaming up with the Austin Bat Cave, a local non-profit writing center, to host a literary journal-making workshop for sixth to eighth graders. The workshop will take place on Saturday, April 18th, from 1-4pm, at the Austin Bat Cave. Be sure to call ahead and reserve a place — 512.524.1489. Mark your calendars! On Thursday, February 12th, BCR will join forces with the Black Warrior Review and Mare Nostrum to feature contributors from our respective magazines. Matthew Zapruder, John Gallaher, Hadara Bar-Nadav, Betsy Wheeler, Elisabeth Benjamin, Jamey Bradbury, Rebecca Hoogs, Brandon Krieg, Zach Savich, and Adam Atkinson will read in this cavalcade of awesomeness. Join us at the Hopleaf (5148 North Clark Street) at 6:00 PM for cash bar and conversation; the reading will begin at 6:30. We look forward to seeing you there! D.A. Powell makes us blush

In a recent blog entry for the Poetry Foundation’s website, D.A. Powell has the following to say about Bat City: “Edited by graduate students from the UT Austin program, the magazine features beautiful artwork and high-quality fiction. But the reason I bought it, and the reason I recommend it, is the outstanding quality of the poetry.” Aw shucks. We hope our next issue will continue to please, and thanks to exciting new work from Dara Weir, Mathias Svalina, Caroline Bird, Brandon Shimoda, and many others, we think it will.

Kiersten Essenpreis Has Us Covered

BCR is excited to announce that Kiersten Essenpreis will be painting the cover of our fifth issue. The Chicago-born painter now lives in Brooklyn and has exhibited work in New York, Los Angeles, Austin, and the Philippines. Her clients include New York Times Magazine, Wired, Nylon, Maverick Records, and Bitch. Check out the “killing field” on her website you fail.

BCR Contributor Nami Mun publishes first novel

Nami Mun, a contributor to the upcoming issue of Bat City Review (#5) published her first novel, Miles from Nowhere, with Riverhead. Miles from nowhere follows a Korean teenage runaway through the streets of New York.
