Scruton claims that this example is an elaboration of Glance.  Most analysts have completely disregarded this passage as a leitmotif. Redlich cites this passage as the “passionate masculine answer” of the “tender feminine query” presented in mm. 1-3 of the Prelude (Redlich, p. 20).
