Domain Edo villas: shogunal regulations

 

 

The shogunate strictly regulated all aspect of daimyo life in Edo, including the design of their villas. Elaborate gates, such as the one above, were restricted to the most powerful daimyo, rouhgly two dozen families. The elaborate roof and guard boxes on both sides reflect the daimyo's status. The gate below, with only one guard box, was for tozama daimyo with at least 50,000 koku in land.

Daimyo with holdings between 10,000 and 50,000 koku were allowed still less imposing gates, such as the one below.
