There are many examples in ASL of nouns that are derived from verbs. These related forms often use the same location, palm orientataion, and handshape, but differ systematically in the movement quality and/or in the number of movement repetitions. The noun form is usually made with repeated restrained movements (CHAIR, for example), while the verb form generally has a longer movement path; often that movement is produced just once (see SIT).
Incidentally, deriving a noun from a verb also happens in English. So, we can derive a noun from the verb illustrate. The derived noun is illustration.
