"Anomians" or "Anomoeans" - An extreme sect of Arians (see below), founded by Aetius (fl. 350). (Its members are also sometimes called Aetians, after their founder.) The sect's distinguishing feature is the conviction that the Homousia - i.e. the doctrine that the Son (who has been conceived) is essentially God - is self-contradictory, since God is eternal and cannot have been conceived.
The Anomians were one of various sects that drew on the Arian belief that Jesus was not divine. The basic issue of the divinity or non-divinity of Jesus threatened to split the early Church. Arianism became heretical after the Council of Nicaea in 325 established the doctrine of Homousia - the identity of the Son in essence, nature, and substance with the Father.
