les groupes rythmiques

In Chapter 3, we discussed intonation of French. Recall that when words are strung together in French to form a sentence, stress is placed on the final syllable of the phrase.
In contrast, English words within a sentence retain their individual stress pattern. Compare the two languages:

Je visite la cathéDRALE.
Je visite la cathédrale Notre DAME.
Je visite la cathédrale Notre Dame à PaRIS.
I'm VIsiting the caTHEdral.
I'm VIsiting the caTHEdral NOtre DAME.
I'm VIsiting the caTHEdral NOtre DAME in PAris.
When sentences become longer, they are broken up into "groupes rythmiques", usually a grammatical unit, in French. At the sentence level, the end of each "groupe rythmique" is characterized by rising intonation except for the final "groupe rythmique" which exhibits falling intonation.

Listening proficiency

A. Repeat the following sentence. The circles indicate unaccented syllables and the dashes indicated accented syllables (by length).

Ils se sont fiancés en juin,
ooooooo----

mariés en octobre,
ooooo----

et ils ont divorcé en mai.
ooooooo----

B. Listen to the following paragraph. As it is read, decide where the breaks are between the “groups rythmiques”

example: Tex, | un tatou bilingue et biculturel | habite actuellement au Texas |.

Tex, un tatou bilingue et biculturel habite actuellement au Texas. Dans son enfance, il a habité chez des nonnes catholiques en France parce que ses parents sont morts très tôt. Aujourd'hui Tex travaille à l'Université du Texas où il donne des cours de français. Tex est vraiment un tatou remarquable parce qu'il porte toujours un béret rond, même quand il fait du sport. En plus, il aime les romans existentialistes.  Answers ...

Finally read through the paragraph out loud being careful to respect the "groupes rythmiques" and the rising and falling intonation associated with each.
