A photo of Thurgood Marshall, who, in 1967, was appointed the first African American Justice of the Supreme Court. Marshall served on the Supreme Court until his retirement in 1991. Prior to serving on the Supreme Court Thurgood Marshall was an influential lawyer, working as chief counsel for the NAACP and arguing numerous cases, including Brown v. Board of Education, before the Supreme Court.
