Galveston Hurricane of 1900

Galveston Hurricane of 1900

In 1900 a hurricane tore though Galveston, TX, claiming between 6,000 and 12,000 lives and causing incredible damage, making it the worst natural disaster in American history. The inability of the local government to handle the crisis led to the formation of a new kind of city government, known as the City Commission or "Galveston Plan," which divided public functions among elected commissioners.
