Narciso Martínez
Narciso Martínez was born on October 29, 1911
in Reynosa Tamaulipas, Mexico.
Shortly after his birth his family moved to a
small town right outside Brownsville, Texas.
He was the son of migrant workers and as a result was often
around when the regional music was being played.
Martínez grew up with a desire to play music and in 1928
he began to play the accordion at dances.
He became so proficient with the accordion
that we went from a one-row button accordion
to the two-row button accordion in 1935.
As Martínez's popularity grew he acquired the nickname
"El Huracán del Valle" ("The Hurricane of the Valley")
as a result of his whirl wind accordion playing. Take a listen and see if you can hear the hurricane.
