Chicano Poetry

Angelica Martinez, editor of the literary magazine Tejidos, discusses recent trends in Chicano Literature. Rene Cisneros and Jamie Cavillo founded Tejidos in 1973 with a grant from the University of Texas. The magazine receives submissions from throughout the United States and Latin American and has subscribers from all over the world. It publishes all types of literary genres, including essays, poems, lays, and short stories. While she notes that men have dominated Chicano literature, Martinez says that in the two years she has edited the magazine she has noticed an increasing number of published Chicanas, especially in poetry, and she explains some of the reasons why Chicanas have been drawn to the genre.

Martinez compares the submissions the magazine receives from California, Colorado and Texas and describes some of the themes that writers in each state address. Martinez explains that most Chicano writers understand their audience is largely academic, but she believes that as the Chicano population grows their audience will become more popular. She also addresses several themes in Chicano literature including politics, activism, cultural identity, machismo, feminism and the family—the latter of which she has found to be most prominent in her own work and that of other Chicanas. Martinez also reads her poem, Para Juan Gamboa.
