It was mentioned as a circumstance of peculiar distress attending the fate of many of the numerous state prisoners confined in Portugal during the Marquis of Pombal's administration, their being debarred, during a course of years, the comforts of confession. When this circumstance was brought to light, it produced a considerable degree of public indignation.
