Saying goodbye

There are many ways to say goodbye in Spanish. Some expressions are best used in formal situations and others are more familiar in tone. Here are some of the most common phrases:

Adiós. Used in both formal and familiar situations; "goodbye."

Hasta luego. More familiar than adiós: "see you later."

Nos vemos. "See you,' informal.

Hasta mañana. Familiar and formal, "see you tomorrow."

Chau/ciao. Comes from the Italian "ciao." Familiar, "bye."

Ya me despido. "It's time to say goodbye," familiar and formal.

Me dio mucho gusto conocerlo/la. "It was nice to meet you," formal.

Muchas gracias por todo. "Thanks for everything," formal.

Nos divertimos mucho. "We had a lot of fun," familiar and formal.

Me la pasé bien. "I had a good time," familiar.
