Bueno, hay un prejuicio en particular que me molesta mucho que es el que sienten algunos dominicanos hacia los haitianos. Y esto tiene probablemente razones históricas por el hecho de que República Dominicana se independizó precisamente de Haití en el año 1844. Sin embargo, el hecho de que se mantenga todavía vivo ese sentimiento de parte de muchos dominicanos puede que se deba más a una campaña de propaganda pseudo-nacionalista que surgió alrededor de los años treinta durante la década… durante la tiranía de Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. Muchos dominicanos que vivieron en esa época o que se formaron bajo las enseñanzas de la época de Trujillo todavía hoy piensan que el haitiano es un enemigo o que es alguien que busca invadir pacíficamente la parte oriental de la isla, es decir la parte que corresponde a República Dominicana con la idea de hacerla una e indivisible. Es decir, de que ambos países se conviertan en uno solo bajo el dominio de los haitianos. Esto es muy lamentable porque República Dominicana y Haití pues son países vecinos y están obligados a compartir la isla. Y las tensiones y los odios raciales está probado que en todas partes solo traen desgracias, o sea, y la mejor prueba de esto es que en la época de Trujillo de la que estaba hablando hace un momento ocurrió una matanza de aproximadamente entre veinte mil y treinta mil personas. Treinta mil haitianos fueron asesinados en una sola noche. Yo temo que si no se le pone alto a esta situación pues algo similar vuelva a ocurrir.

Many Dominicans that lived during that time or that were educated during Truijillo’s time still think that Haitians are the enemies or that they look to pacifically invade the western part of the island, that’s to say the part that belongs to the Dominican Republic, with the idea of making it one and indivisible. That’s to say, that both countries become one single country under the control of the Haitians. This is very unfortunate because the Dominican Republic and Haiti are neighboring countries and are forced to share the same island. And it has been proven everywhere that the tensions and the racial hatred only bring misfortune, I mean, and the best proof of this is that in the time of Trujillo, the time I was talking about a moment ago, there was a mass murder of between twenty and thirty thousand people. Thirty thousand Haitians were murdered in one night. I fear that if this situation isn’t stopped then something similar could occur again.
