What is Iridium?

Iridium is actually the 77th element on the periodic table and is most commonly found in asteroids and meteorites. The idea of 77 protons for the unbonded atom is analagous to the 77 satellites orbiting the earth.  The original plan called for 77 satellites but was modified to just 66 satellites.  The 66th element in the periodic table is Dysprosium and means "bad approach" in latin; therefore, the designers decided to stay with  the name Iridium  for marketing puposes.

To us, Iridium means

TOTAL GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS.

In a brief encapsulation, the Iridium creation is 66 satellites scattered at 11 polar orbits (LEDO orbits) at 485 miles above the earth.
