This large trove of bronze bells (dōtaku) and spears was uncovered in Shimane prefecture, known in ancient times as Izumo. Over 350 bronze swords were discovered nearby. The artifacts suggest that Izumo was a center of political power. This is intriguing because Izumo is closely associated with the wind god Susa-no-o. Does the subjugation of the descendants of the wind god by descedants of the sun goddess in Japanese legend correspond to the subjugation of the Izumo clans by Yamato clans?
