The Silver Pavillion, or Ginkakuji, was built in the 1480s for the 8th Ashikaga shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimasa (1436-1490), a grandson of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. The temple is formally known as Jishōji. The most distinctive aspects of the Silver Pavillion are the "mountain" and "ocean" of silver sand.
