TCL, Lyon’s public transportation agency, carries out a spontaneous check at the Bellecour metro stop. It was interesting how many people were in violation given that this process is fairly common. These checks, carried out relatively frequently, ensure that metro users have either validated a paper ticket or their Técély, a prepaid Metro card. If a user is unable to present a valid ticket to an officer, he is in violation and must pay fines. Fines begin at 48 euros (an immediate payment to the officer) and can accumulate up to 180 euros.
