Iridium Logo    Detail of Operations

A Using the following pictures as a guide, this is how the system works.  Microwaves  transmitted from an Iridium handset are received by the nearest satellite.  The call is then "bounced off" or transferred to other satellites to the nearest satellite to the PSTN (Public-Switched Telephone Network) upon which the number dialed resides.  The call is then downloaded through one of the 12 world gateways where it is routed through local PSTN lines to reach the called party.
