私は２００６年にテキサス大学を卒業しました。
I graduated from UT in 2006.
外交官になりたいと思っていたので、テキサス大学を卒業する前に半年くらい国務省の日本部でのインターンとして働きました。とても良い経験で、勉強にもなりましたが、私は政府の官僚組織に向いていないことに気が付きました。ですから、将来のことを考え直さなければならなかったのです。仕事をした経験から自分がどれほど勉強が好きかを実感して、大学院に行こうと思いました。
I used to want to be a diplomat. Before I graduated from UT I spent half a year working as an intern at the U.S. State Department at the Japan desk. It was a good experience and I learned a lot of things, but I realized that the bureaucratic system wasn’t my thing. So I had to rethink what I wanted to do with my life. My experience working made me realize that I enjoy learning, so I thought, “I should go to graduate school”…
テキサス大学にいた最後の学期、フルブライト奨学金や大学院などいろいろな機関に応募しました。フルブライトも、一番入りたかったスタンフォード大学院も、何とか受かって、言うまでもなく最高に嬉しかったです。
My last semester at UT I applied for a few different things, including the Fulbright scholarship and various graduate schools. I somehow got both the scholarship and admittance to my number one choice for graduate school, Stanford. Needless to say, I was incredibly happy.
２００７年から２００８年まで、フルブライト奨学金で仙台の東北大学に一年間留学して、言葉遊びの研究をしました。それから、２００８年にスタンフォード大学院アジア言語学科の博士課程プログラムに入って、日本語言語学を勉強し始めました。大学院の二年生のとき、スタンフォードの日本語プログラムの助手をすることができたのがとても良い経験でした。助手をやっていて、初めてどれほど教えるのが好きかということに気がつきました。研究よりも、教えることの方が好きだったので、研究をたくさんしなければならない博士課程は私には合わないと思って、修士号だけとって卒業しました。卒業するころ、テスラ・モーターズという電気自動車の会社がちょうど東京にショールームを立ち上げる予定で、日本語ができる社員募集をしているところでした。それで、LinkedInで私の履歴書を見て、連絡をくれたので、テスラ・モーターズに就職しました。
From 2007 to 2008, I studied abroad at Tohoku University in Sendai as a Fulbright Fellow and researched Wordplay. In 2008 I entered the Ph.D. program at Stanford University and started my studies in the field of Japanese Linguistics. I had a great experience teaching as a TA in the Japanese language program my second year. During my stint as a TA, I noticed how much I liked teaching. In fact, I liked it more than research—which is what Ph.D. students are really supposed to be focused on. I figured that getting a Ph.D. might not really be the best thing for me, so I graduated with just an M.A. Right around when I graduated, Tesla Motors (a company that makes electric cars, based in Palo Alto, California) was planning to open a new showroom in Tokyo, Japan and was conducting a job search for new employees with Japanese skills. An HR recruiter saw my resume on LinkedIn and contacted me, so I joined Tesla.
テスラ・モーターズの仕事で、半年東京に住みました。ときどき出張で香港にも行ったりしました。１０人以下のチームでゼロからショールームを立ち上げる経験をし、とても充実した時間を送りましたが、残業もとても多かったです。パロアルトの本社に戻って、仕事をし続けましたが、燃え尽きて、一年間ちょっとで別の道を探すことにしました。
Due to my work with Tesla, I lived in Tokyo for half a year, and sometimes made business trips to Hong Kong. I experienced the opening of the Tokyo Showroom with a team of under 10 people—everyday there was a new challenge and the time just flew by! I have to be honest though, there was a lot of overtime work. I returned to the Palo Alto Headquarters and continued working for Tesla, but I felt burned out, and after a year and a couple of months decided to search out a new path for myself.
ある日、昔のスタンフォード大学から日本語のプログラムで非常勤講師として働いてくれませんかと連絡が来ました。 これはチャンス！と思って、早速講師の仕事を始めました。今年は3年目になります。今の仕事は楽しくて、ようやく私に合った仕事を見つけたような気がします。これから、教えるスキルを磨いていきたいと思っています。
One day, I received a message from Stanford University asking if I’d like to return as a part time lecturer. This was my big break!—I started right away. It’s now my third year at Stanford. My work is a lot of fun, and I feel like I’ve finally found the right job for me. I’d like to continue polishing my teaching skills from here on out and do my best.
テキサス大学の日本語学科の後輩へのアドバイス：自分に合う道を見つけるためにいろいろな事をやってみてください。夢は大きく!
My advice to all my fellow UT Japanese department kouhai: try a lot of different things to find the path that is right for you. Dream big!
