私は今フルブライト奨学金で東北大学に留学しています。
フルブライト奨学金制度は、アメリカと相手国が参加している二国間教育交流プログラムで、参加者の交流を通して参加二ヶ国相互の理解を促進することを目的としています。日本とアメリカとの間のフルブライト・プログラムは、日米教育委員会が実施しています。日米のフルブライト奨学生は、留学相手国で各自の学術活動を行ないながら、その国の歴史や文化を学んで、大学やその地域の活動に参加することによって、なるべく多くの人々と接するよう望まれます。また、帰国後は職業分野あるいは私的な活動を通して、直接的・間接的に日米関係の向上に貢献するよう期待されます。I
am studying abroad at Tohoku University on a Fulbright Scholarship right
now. The objective of the Fulbright grant is to promote better understanding
between the United States and other countries through educational exchange. Fulbright
scholarships between the Japan and the U.S. are managed by the Japan-United
States Educational Commission. Grantees, in addition to pursuing
their individual studies and research, are expected to study the history
and culture of the host country, participate in non-academic activities
in order to meet a broad spectrum of people, and contribute to the bilateral
relationship through their professional and personal activities upon returning
to their home country.
東北大学は東北地方で最大の人口規模を有する仙台にあります。冬は寒いのですが、仙台はとても住みやすい都市です。それから、東京と違って、自転車があればどこにでも行けます。仙台での生活を充実しています。最近新年(2008)を祝っています。日本人の友達と一緒におせち料理を食べて、初詣に行ってきました。それから、お箏を習っているのでこれからのお弾き初めを楽しみにしています。Tohoku University is located in Sendai, the city with the biggest population in the Tohoku region. The winter is really cold, but Sendai is a nice city to live in. Also, unlike Tokyo, if you have a bike you can pretty much go anywhere you want. I have been enjoying my life in Sendai. Recently I’ve been celebrating the New Year (2008). I ate New Year’s food (osechi ryouri) and made my first shrine visit of the year (hatsumoude) with some Japanese friends. Also, I’m learning the Japanese koto, so I’m looking forward to playing the first song of the year with everyone. (It’s kind of a special event).
研究のテーマは、ことば遊びです。駄じゃれからなぞなぞまでいろいろなことば遊びに興味がありますが、今は漫画に見られる特殊ルビの研究に専念しています。
研究に加えて、古典、日本文化論、会話分析や論文の書き方などいろいろを勉強しています。もちろん全部日本語でやるのでちょっと難しいのですが、とても良い勉強になりそうです。
The topic of my research is (Japanese) wordplay. I have a broad interest
in everything from puns to word riddles but right now I’m focusing specifically
on researching the use of playful rubi (glosses) seen in manga.
In addition to research, I am also studying the classics, cultural theory,
discourse analysis, essay writing, etc. Of course it is all in Japanese
so it is very challenging, but I think I will learn a lot.
実は、昔、外交官になりたいと思っていました。テキサス大学を卒業する前に半年くらい国務省の日本部でインターンとして働いていました。とても良い経験で、勉強にもなりましたが、私は政府の官僚組織に向いていないことに気が付きました。ですから、将来のことを考え直さなければならなかったのです。仕事をした経験から自分がどれほど勉強が好きかを実感して、大学院に行こうと思い始めました。
Actually, (before all of this) I used to want to be a diplomat. Before
I graduated from UT I spent half a year working as an intern at the U.S.
State Department at the Japan desk. It was a good experience and
I learned a lot of things, but I realized that the bureaucratic system
wasn’t my thing. So I had to rethink what I wanted to do with my
life. My experience working made me realize that I enjoy learning,
so I started to consider going to graduate school.
テキサス大学にいた最後の学期、フルブライト奨学金や大学院などいろいろを申し込んでみました。フルブライトも、一番入りたかったスタンフォード大学院も、何とか受かって、言うまでもなく最高に嬉しかったです。
ということで、今年(2008年)の九月に帰国したら、スタンフォード大学院アジア言語学科の博士課程プログラムに入って、日本語言語学を勉強します。意味論と語用論を勉強するつもりです。
My last semester at UT I applied for a few different things, including
the Fulbright scholarship and various graduate schools. I somehow
got both the scholarship and admittance to my number one choice for graduate
school, Stanford. Needless to say, I was incredibly happy.
So when I return to the U.S. in September of 2008 I’ll be entering Stanford’s
Ph.D. Program in the Department of Asian Languages to study Japanese Linguistics. I
plan to study semantics and pragmatics.
テキサス大学の日本語学科の後輩へのアドバイス：自分に合う道を見つけるためにいろいろな事をやってみてください。夢は大きく!
My advice to all my fellow UT Japanese department kouhai: try
a lot of different things to find the path that is right for you. Dream
big!
